Gartner has today released the figures pertaining to Smartphone & Mobile Phone sales for 2nd Quarter of 2013 & it has brought some good news for Windows Phone owners. Microsoft officially is now the No. 3 Smartphone OS overtaking Blackberry.
Yes those figures might not look that pretty for us Windows Phone owners but a growth of 27% in market share is quite significant in a world that’s literally dominated by Android & iOS (however the share of iOS has dipped by 24%). During similar period, Android grew by 23%.
Coming to Nokia .. this is what Gartner said
Nokia: Slowing demand of feature phone sales across many markets worldwide, and fierce competition in the smartphone segment, affected Nokia’s mobile phone sales in the second quarter of 2013. Nokia’s mobile phone sales totaled 61 million units, down from 83 million units a year ago. Nokia’s Lumia sales grew 112.7 percent in the second quarter of 2013 thanks to its expanded Lumia portfolio, which now include Lumia 520 and Lumia 720. “With the recent announcement of the Lumia 1020, Nokia has built a wide portfolio of devices at multiple price points, which should boost Lumia sales in the second half of 2013,” said Mr. Gupta. “However, Nokia is facing tough competition from Android devices, especially from regional and Chinese manufacturers which are more aggressive in terms of price points.”
Yes overall Nokia has still a long way to go but things are now starting to look bright especially with the launch of Lumia 520 which has been a silent hit across markets selling in volumes. Nokia has now a pretty well defined portfolio of Lumia devices ranging from Lumia 520 to Lumia 1020 and now with the incoming GDR3 update – more hardware is expected in the high-end segment in the form of Quadcore & 1080p devices. A phablet & tablet are also rumored to be incoming which should make this portfolio further strong. Cool !
