We covered a couple of stories in the last week as to how the private beta of WhatsApp for Windows Phone platform had gained some significant improvements. It was not long and the same update along with those key improvements was made public today. The much awaited WhatsApp update was out!
WhatsApp so finally picked-up a critical update today moving on to version 2.11.587.0 and brought the following improvements
- WhatsApp now opens faster
- Share Location: drop and drag pin lets you share a precise location
- You can now add captions to photos and videos
- Crop and rotate photos
- Added ability to archive chats and groups
- Each chat or group can now have it’s own background
- Better support for phones with high-resolution screens
While not explicitly mentioned in the change-log, the subject version has full compatibility with Windows Phone 8.1. The beta version was said to have battery life improvements too so we can expect the same in public version also.
Other changes include minor UI improvements, ability to mute groups for upto 1 year, zero lag while accessing media and the emoticons scrolling is now vertical with horizontal swipes taking you to the next sub-group.

Today’s WhatsApp update was not glitch free as the first update (version 2.11.586) resulted in some users having issues with chat data & the app itself throwing black screens which though was sortable by way of a fresh install. So a quick fix update (version 2.11.587.0) was rolled by WhatsApp team to address these issues.
